Edibles vs. Flower: Which is right for you?

The way that you experience cannabis is a choice that you should give careful consideration to before you dive in. At some point, you are likely to come to a crossroads deciding between consuming cannabis via edibles or via flowers, and each is a completely different experience. No matter if you are brand-new to the cannabis world or if you just want to switch things up, you should learn a bit more about the differences between edibles and flowers when it comes to your cannabis consumption.

The “High” Difference

Among the most important differences between the two is the type of high that you experience. Since this is the reason why so many people are interested in consuming cannabis in the first place, it is a good place to start.

When consuming cannabis via a flower, the THC is absorbed through your lungs and bloodstream and heads straight to your brain. This means that the impact of the THC can be experienced within minutes, and you may be able to better judge just how high you truly are.

Edibles offer a different experience as they must travel through your digestive system before they ultimately reach your brain and create the experience of being high. They must be metabolized in your liver, and that is also a part of the process that slows down the impact. Therefore, you need to allow yourself additional time to truly experience the impacts of THC when consumed via edibles.

However, modern technology has introduced nano-emulsified gummies to the market. In these products, the THC is made water-soluble, allowing it to be absorbed directly in the stomach rather than waiting for the liver to process it. While this leads to a much faster onset, some users report that nano-emulsified options have shorter-lasting effects compared to the heavy, lingering high of traditional gummies.

Dosing Warning: Start Low, Go Slow

A word of caution to anyone who is new to cannabis or who perhaps hasn’t indulged in it in some time: You should always start at a low dosage and scale up very slowly. This is particularly true when you decide that you might want to consume THC via edibles. The reason? Because edibles take longer to travel through your system, it is not always obvious just how much the effects have taken hold for you.

When you start at a low dosage, you can see how your body reacts to that and go from there. You need to allow your body at least a couple of hours to ingest the full impact of the low dosage that you have consumed before moving it up any higher. Allow your body to take the time that it requires to adjust to the THC that you have consumed. That is the only way that you can rest assured that you don’t overdo it and ultimately end up with impacts that you didn’t intend.

For those who want to be exact with their intake, consider perforated gummy options. Brands like Off-Hours, currently the #1 gummy in New York, infuse each half of the perforation individually rather than the whole gummy. This design ensures incredibly consistent dosing and allows you to split a gummy with total confidence in the potency of each piece.

Cost Efficiency

Another consideration when thinking about edibles vs. flowers is how much each is likely to cost. Here is what you should know:

  • Flowers – These are priced on a per-gram basis and allow you a greater level of flexibility to simply get the amount that you want without spending more than you intended.
  • Edibles – These are priced based on the amount of THC that they contain. This means that it is somewhat easier to track exactly how much THC you are consuming, but there is less flexibility on pricing.

For the most part, edibles offer a better price-to-THC ratio, so you should consider this when considering how much your budget can handle.

It is also worth noting that the type of oil used significantly impacts the price point. While distillate-based gummies are affordable and effective, live resin and live rosin options are typically more expensive. These “premium” extracts are prized for providing a potent, full-spectrum high that preserves the plant’s original terpenes and cannabinoids.
